Apparently Easter weekend is a really big holiday in Australia and I arrived the morning of Easter Friday to a closed and hungover city.
My super awesome Californian friend, Kyle, happened to be in Sydney for business and let me crash in his hotel suite at Sheraton on the Park and do touristy things for the weekend. He was feeling a bit tired of going around alone, so he was happy to have a friend in town.
It was pretty drizzly and most things were closed but we managed to make the most of it. We found a nearby hot yoga studio, Hom yoga, where I felt rather self conscious (those people were really fit!) and we lined up for a Malaysian restaurant Kyle had read about and he had his first Malaysian food experience ever!
Remarkably on the Sunday morning, dashing out for a hot yoga class, we bumped into a good friend of Kyle's from his undergrad at the hotel's breakfast room! That just turned our weekend into a huge social adventure, joining other Californians and even a Vancouverite at an event in Watson's Bay and then the Sydney Horse Races.
We (pretty much mostly Vipul and I- we kept losing Kyle) met the nicest ladies at the races that day and got some interesting life wisdom. Penny, a beautiful freckled blonde, let me in on the secret to her marriage which was basically this: marry someone you find really hot. Various friends of hers were getting divorced after finding they had married "nice" and "appropriate" people that they had no passion with, whereas even when disagreeing with her husband she still, er, wanted to be intimate with him. Interesting!
Kyle and Ryan had to go to work on Tuesday so Vipul and I did vacation-y things.
That's my first weekend in Sydney in a nutshell! Well..minus meeting with my crush who I met at UQ in 2008...that's a whole other story.
